Getting smaller used to be the goal of phone producers. More compact, easier to carry around. The screen only displayed basic graphics and information, so they were often very low res, often black and white lcd. Then screen technology and touch technology were improved and the screen started to replace the key pads. Once you had a larger detailed display on the phone, people wanted to look at pictures (of porn) and watch videos (of porn), so the size trend reversed with companies turning to making bigger and bigger phones to provide more larger screens. Of course that is limited by hand size and battery life (bigger screen means more energy used to power it). So companies are still trying to find clever ways to create larger phones without making then cumbersome and improving battery technology to sustain them.
