Cliff and I became friends in the California desert in the 90s after he'd retired from ink work. At first I had no idea he even had that in his past. We talked for years abt books and authors and stories... He was a sweetheart and I was always surprised when people would come into his shop and say things like they'd been wanting to meet him for decades and they became a tattoo artist bc of him, etc. He'd always be kind and patient and eventually walk them out after selling them a book or telling them to read more, that it was good for them. When I'd say, wow, I guess you were pretty good, huh? He'd say, yeh, I guess I did okay. We'd talk about his old parlor in L.A. or the rock legends he worked on and such, and then we'd eventually get back to talking about books and authors. I miss that guy.
