the low self esteem probably stems from his receding hairline. taking pictures that specifically omit a physical trait that he is sensitive over only reenforces the perception that it is an undesirable characteristic. its like giving a kid a nightlight because hes afraid of the dark. you aren't convincing him that the dark is nothing to be afraid of, you're indulging the negative behavior. not trying to be a dick, but establishing a control set of pics that does not omit his face/head could, possibly, do more for his confidence than nameless faceless redditors saying the pictures look great. a personal example; i was a chubby unpopular kid growing up. i lost about 35 lbs and people started being nice to me and i hated it because i always felt that they weren't being nice to me, they were being nice to a skinny person. a little above average now, no one gives me the time of day, but its honest disinterest. then again, based on this post id be hard to convince anyone its a totally physical problem.
