History nerd here! What you've posted is actually a pillory, which is commonly confused with another device called a stocks. The difference between the two is that a stocks secures the legs, or sometimes the hands, and is usually close to the ground. A pillory secures the neck and hands and forces the victim to stand, often in an uncomfortable position. A stockade is a fortress made of logs placed vertically side by side. That fortress also lends it's name to a military prison.
