Wile the "let them breathe!" part is important, don't be fooled: there is no safe zone. Breath play will *always* be dangerous. You're free to do it (I personally love breathplay), but if you're going to do it, you have to make a conscious decision to take the risk, and that requires knowing what the risk is. You could easily crush the trachea, you could choke for too long and induce brain dammage, your partner could pass out without you noticing and be unable to safeword, if you use a ligature you might not be able to remove it quickly in an emergency, and, worst of all, your partner could go into sudden cardiac arrest. These things lead to death, and while some are avoidable (have them hold a bell so it falls and rings if they pass out), cardiac arrest can happen without warning and there's nothing you can do unless you have a defibrillator on hand. Certain techniques can make it *safer*, but there's always risk.
