The author was Charles Moulton (nee William Moulton Marston). He was a Harvard alum psychologist and lawyer. He created the systolic blood pressure test (which he used as a means to create the first Lie Detector), was a Ph.D who invented the DISC theory (Marston's theory centers around four different personality traits: Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance).
ANYWAY, I said all that to say this: Marston was married (to a psychologist), but throughout his adult life, they were happily polygamous with a woman named Olive who lived with them in an extended relationship. Marston had two kids with each woman (the kids admit this biological connection now, but at the time, the Marston's "adopted" Olive Byrne's two children).
He fully admitted that there was intentional bondage symbolism in the comic, and the magic lasso was a sort of early representation for the lie detector.
